PLANS FOR SUNDOME 20TH BIRTHDAY UNDERWAY
One of the icons of the Yakima Valley, the Yakima Valley SunDome is turning 20 years old this year and a committee has been formed to help develop a birthday celebration to mark the occasion. Plans for the event include a special luncheon to be held on Thursday, April 15 and basically everyone is invited.
“We had nearly 2000 people at the luncheon that kicked off the opening of the SunDome back in 1990,” said Greg Stewart, president of the Central Washington Fair Association, the group that manages the SunDome. “We would love to have that many people here to help us celebrate in April.”
Stewart said that all of the business organizations and service clubs in the area will receive an invitation to the celebration within a couple of days. The general public is also invited to attend.
The exact agenda and plans for the event are still being developed but according to the event chairman, Gary Lukehart, recognition will be given to the people who helped build the SunDome, along with some of those who have used the building over the past 20 years.
The SunDome has become a statewide and regional center for everything from concerts to consumer shows to sporting events, high school graduations to trade shows and more.
“There have been some 14 million people use the dome for events over the past 20 years,” Lukehart said. “That’s pretty incredible when you think about it. Hopefully everyone will mark the date on their calendar and help us celebrate.”
Tickets for the lunch celebration will be $15 per person for groups and $20 for individuals. # # #
